I am still high on Westswedish endorphins and they make me feel dizzy. Blazing sunshine, 30.000 beautiful, well dressed, bronzed people and a line-up to die for, who could have probably asked for more? This year, the probably most luxurious festival in Europe – Way Out West in Gothenburg– had Instagram hashtags, provided the most cleanest festival toilets ever and – went veggie. Yes, the whole festival did which makes it one of the greenest ones ever. And there was Kraftwerk playing a 3D show. But regardless of all these benefits, visitors would simply dive into this constant high when hanging out at the festival ground. Because yes Göteborg, you are Swedens musical capital for sure and life feels just like a super chill holiday over here. And luckily, there is no camping involved in this one, the Slottsskogen Park site closes at 12pm and after the Stay Out West club shows you’d fall in a cozy bed from your Gothenburg friends.
Musical highlights occured en mass, amongst them one energetic performance of our favourite Brooklyners Friends, the surely not dead Swedish punk rockers Refused who made us headbang our brains out and one insane John Maus who just hit himself constantly whilst singing playback. All this was topped up by headliners such as the Sonic Youths Thurston Moore, Bon Iver and the ever hyped OFWGKTA. Sadly, we missed a couple of bands who I anticipated the most such as Frank Ocean who had to cancel his Scandinavian shows due to illness; plus the psychodelic Django Django, the master of Blues rock Marc Lanegan and funky Kindness.
And you know what we did not know? There is a Swedish supergroup called Ingrid (who consist of Peter Bjorn and John, Miike Snow, Lykke Li, Coco Morier, Jocke Åhlund, Nille Perned, Jonas Torvestig, Johanna Beckman and Tomas Nordmark DAMN!). And played one pretty ass kicking world debut concert at Stay Out West:
Summarizing this Swedish dream holiday, one could say that I ate at least one cinnamon bun (“Kanelbulle”) a day and felt extremely privileged to attend this blissful gathering. Because Way Out West is the name of this peaceful state of mind that I would love to go back to on the first day when it is over already.
